Volvo Car Corporation ramps up assembly of the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid. The Corporation is now ramping up production of the new Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. After the initial batch of 1,000 model year 2013 cars, production will increase to 4,000-6,000 cars as of model year 2014. The assembly of the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid has been successfully integrated on the same line as the company's other models at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg. This is a remarkable achievement considering that the sophisticated plug-in hybrid technology includes two complete drive trains and a powerful battery that provides a range of up to 50 kilometres on pure electric power. We are first in the industry to integrate a plug-in hybrid in an established production flow together with other car models," says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Car Corporation. "The integration in the standard production flow gives the plug-in hybrid buyer the possibility to choose in principle all options available for the standard V60."
Amazon will be using 10,000 robots in its warehouses by the end of the year, according to the man who runs the company. CEO Jeff Bezos told investors at a shareholder meeting Wednesday that he expects to exponentially increase the number of robots used to fulfill customer orders. There are currently about 1,000 robot workers on Amazon floors. Associated Press reports that Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, says last year it hired more than 20,000 people at its fulfillment centers, with more than half starting out as seasonal workers, and is looking to hire another 2,500 full-time workers for its order fulfillment centers around the US, adding to the Seattle-based company’s already 117,300 full-time and part-time employees at the end of 2013.
Guest lecturer Krasimir Kolarov (co-writer of the lecture notes along with Professor Khatib) presents Trajectory Generation. Lecture by Professor Oussama Khatib for Introduction to Robotics (CS223A) in the Stanford Computer Science Department. CS223A is an introduction to robotics which covers topics such as Spatial Descriptions, Forward Kinematics, Inverse Kinematics, Jacobians, Dynamics, Motion Planning and Trajectory Generation, Position and Force Control, and Manipulator Design.
Kawasaki has introduced the 'Y Series' in Bulgaria, a brand new robot designed for fast pick and place operations particularly aimed at packaging and sorting process applications. The new Delta Picker is ideal for the movement and placement of low weight products and offers extremely short cycle times typically 0.27 seconds for 1kg and of 0.45 seconds for a 3kg payload. With the work envelope of 1300mm diameter, this equates to a maximum work rate of 175 picks per minute. The robot offers 4 axis operation but can have an optional 5th axis for the picking up of two parts in one cycle. This function is particularly suited to applications in the food, electronics and solar industries.
